The drive mechanisms commonly used in punch‑press robots fall into four main categories: hydraulic, pneumatic, electric, and mechanical. Among these, hydraulic and pneumatic drives are the most widely employed.
Below, the editor will introduce these four types of drive systems one by one.
1. Hydraulic‑Driven Type Hydraulic‑driven manipulators typically comprise a drive system consisting of hydraulic actuators (various hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors), servo valves, oil pumps, reservoirs, and other components, which power the manipulator’s working mechanism. They generally offer substantial lifting capacities—often exceeding several hundred kilograms—and are characterized by a compact structure, smooth motion, excellent shock and vibration resistance, and good explosion‑proof performance. However, their hydraulic components demand high manufacturing precision and superior sealing; otherwise, oil leakage can contaminate the environment.
2. Pneumatic drive: Its drive system typically consists of pneumatic cylinders, pneumatic valves, air tanks, and an air compressor. It is characterized by a readily available air supply, rapid actuation, a simple structure, low manufacturing costs, and ease of maintenance. However, it is difficult to achieve precise speed control, and the operating pressure cannot be too high, resulting in relatively limited gripping force.
3. Electric Drive Electric drive is the most widely used actuation method in robotic manipulators. It features convenient power supply, fast response, and substantial driving force (with joint-type models capable of handling payloads up to 400 kg). Signal sensing, transmission, and processing are straightforward, and a variety of flexible control strategies can be implemented. The drive motors typically include stepper motors, with DC servo motors (AC) serving as the primary actuation type.
Due to the high rotational speeds of electric motors, speed-reduction mechanisms—such as harmonic drives, RV cycloidal gear reducers, gear drives, screw drives, and multi-link mechanisms—are typically employed. However, some robotic manipulators have begun to adopt direct-drive (DD) systems that use high-torque, low-speed motors without speed reducers, which both simplifies the mechanical architecture and enhances control accuracy.
4. Mechanically Driven Type Mechanical drive is used only in applications where the motion is fixed. Typically, a cam-and-link mechanism is employed to achieve the prescribed motion. Its characteristics include reliable and precise operation, high operating speed, and low cost; however, it is not easily adjustable.
